Nieuwe fles Coca Cola komt mogelijk uit Geleen (investering van € 100 mln boven de markt)

Het Amerikaanse Coca Cola heeft voor de ontwikkeling van een duurzamere colafles het oog laten vallen op de het bedrijf Avantium in Geleen. De belangstelling kan uitmonden in een investering van € 100 mln, maar het is de vraag of die in Geleen wordt geïnvesteerd.

Dat nieuws komt uit Amerika is via Het Financieele Dagblad bekend geworden. Avantium is een proeffabriek voor plastics uit natuurlijke grondstoffen. Het gaat om suikers. De officiële naam van de grondstof is PEF (polytheen furanoaat, aldus de krant. 

EX-DSM

De krant citeert Avantium-topman Tom van Aken (ex-DSM) die denkt dat de bioplastic-fles van Avantium het colablikje overbodig kan maken. De biofles zou ook de cola langer houdbaar kunnen maken. In 2012 moet er definitief worden gekozen. Volgens Het Financieele Dagblad komt de echte fabriek 'waarschijnlijk buiten Nederland'.

Voormalig eigenaar Kruidvat investeert met anderen € 30 mln in nieuwe fabriek Geleen

Kruidvat-grondlegger De Rijcke stopt een deel van de opbrengst van de verkoop van zijn detailhandelsketen in een nieuwe plasticfabriek in Geleen (Chemelot). Samen met anderen gaat het om € 30 mln. Het betreft een proeffabriek van de onderneming Avantium. Die ex-dochter van Shell wil in Zuid-Limburg bewijzen dat het mogelijk is om bioplastics te maken. Als de fabriek een succes is gaat de massaproductie hoogstwaarschijnlijk naar het buitenland.

Dat schrijft Het Financieele Dagblad vandaag. Volgens de krant wordt het nieuws van de investering in de loop van de dag bekend gemaakt. 

Avantium wil onder meer schonere verpakkingen gaan maken voor frisdrankfabrikanten. 

EERDER

De bouw van de fabriek is al eerder aangekondigd. Maar de start bleef uit omdat het benodigde geld niet op tafel kwam. Volgens Het Financieele Dagblad zat Avantium tot 2000 bij Shell. Er is in 2007 nog sprake geweest van een beursgang. Dat ging niet door vanwege de wereldwijde financiële crisis.

Eerste miljoen binnen voor fabriek voor bioplastics van ex-Shell in Geleen

Avantium wil in Geleen een testfabriek voor de productie van bioplastics bouwen. Het Amsterdamse technologiebedrijf, een spin-off van Shell, heeft daarvoor al euro 1 mln subsidie binnen. Het bedrijf denkt de resterende euro 15 mln die nodig is, dit jaar nog bij investeerders op te halen. Dat zegt Tom van Aken, ceo van Avantium.

 

Avantium heeft al een drietal klanten dat gebruik zal gaan maken van de bioplastics die het bedrijf in Geleen gaat produceren: DAF Trucks, Cargill-dochter NatureWorks en Teijin Aramid, een producent van kogelwerende vezels die onderdeel is van het Japanse Teijin.

Van Aken verwacht dat het bedrag deels door bestaande aandeelhouders, waaronder ING en de investeringsfondsen Aescap en Navitas, en deels door nieuwe bijeengelegd wordt. 'Er is veel interesse. Zowel van Amerikaanse als Europese partijen.'

Avantium kondigde eind 2007 aan naar de beurs te willen. Het bedrijf wilde geld ophalen om de productie van Furanics, een chemische bouwsteen geproduceerd uit biomassa, op te voeren. Uit Furanics, inmiddels omgedoopt tot YXY, kunnen zowel biobrandstoffen als bioplastics vervaardigd worden. Avantium had daarbij vooral hoge verwachtingen van de toepassing als biobrandstof.

Door het uitbreken van de financiële crisis werden de beursplannen van Avantium echter afgeblazen. De technologie is desondanks verder ontwikkeld. Daarbij is het accent verschoven van biobrandstoffen naar bioplastics. Van Aken: 'Omdat de drang om te vergroenen in de chemische industrie groter is dan in de oliesector, hebben we onze focus verlegd naar bioplastics.'

Volgens Van Aken is de tijd rijp voor de volgende fase: de productie opschalen, wat in de testfabriek gaat gebeuren. Naar verwachting kan de fabriek in het eerste kwart van 2011 al operationeel zijn. 'We denken dat we inmiddels zover zijn dat we op prijs kunnen concurreren met bestaande plastics. In 2015 willen we dan de eerste grote productiefaciliteit hebben. We weten nog niet waar dat zal zijn.'

Er wordt in brede kring gezocht naar nieuwe partners. YXY is volgens Avantium geschikt als bouwsteen voor onder meer waterflessen, tapijten, textiel, supervezels, weekmakers, harsen, verven en lakken.

Voor de testfabriek, die op het oude DSM-terrein Chemelot in Geleen komt te staan, ontvangt Avantium euro 1 mln subsidie van het ministerie van Landbouw en Agentschap NL. Het bedrijf is nog in de race voor een aantal andere subsidies.

Er zijn geen concrete plannen om Avantium alsnog naar de beurs te brengen, aldus Van Aken.

Avantium and The Coca-Cola Company sign partnership agreement to develop next generation 100% plant based plastic: PEFExceptional functional properties make biobased plastic PEF a suitable alternative for future beverage packaging following technology break-through by Avantium

Dutch research and technology company Avantium has developed a patented technology YXY to produce 100% biobased PEF bottles. Currently PET is the most widely used oil-based polyester. Based on the performance of the new PEF material, Avantium believes PEF will become the next-generation biobased polyester.

Today the company announced an agreement with The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) to further co-develop Avantium's YXY technology for producing PEF bottles. First milestones include the start-up of an Avantium PEF pilot plant, officially opened on December 8th in Geleen, the Netherlands. It is expected that other large co-development partners will join from early 2012.

Avantium's CEO Tom van Aken: "Our YXY solution for the packaging industry creates a new biobased plastic with exceptional functional properties at a competitive price. We believe it is economically viable and has a significantly reduced environmental footprint. We have already made bottles with exceptional barrier and thermal properties and our production process fits well with existing supply chains. We plan to initiate commercial production of PEF in about three to four years."

PEF can be derived from any biomass feedstock containing carbohydrates, such as sugarcane, agricultural residues, plants and grains. Using YXY as a fast and efficient chemical-catalytic technology, these carbohydrates can be converted into a wide variety of bioplastics.

Current process economic estimates indicate that PEF will be a viable alternative to petroleum-based PET. Says Tom van Aken: "PEF is 100% biobased and when commercialized will be fully recyclable. We believe that PEF fulfills key criteria to become a next generation biobased plastic for food, beverages and other applications. We are very excited about the co-development phase we are entering with The Coca-Cola Company to continue the development of PEF and make this new material ready for mass production and recycling. Their leadership and experience in commercializing biobased materials make them a great partner to work with as we commercialize this exciting new material".

On 8 December, Avantium officially opened its pilot plant in the Netherlands, to start up its YXY process at scale. The pilot plant, with a capacity of 40 tons per year, produces PEF material for application development. The collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company is key to secure a smooth transition into the mass production phase of PEF bottles. Avantium is also actively discussing partnerships with other leading brand owners to develop PEF bottles, fibers and film. In the longer term Avantium will license its YXY technology to enable large scale, world-wide production and use of its biobased plastic materials.
